Liu Yuan, 18th century founder of the Huai Xuan school, greatly advocated the learning and practice of the Great Learning. His commentary Great Learning Simple Explanation goes into the secrets of this ancient art. In Liu Yuan’s words, “A person is endowed with the center of heaven and earth that then generates the true nature of the five kinships. It is an unadulterated embodiment of Taiji. A person inherently has it and it is called virtue, which in its root is empty and illuminating. Next, life begins and one acquires preference for thick and thin, pure and impure. Then after birth one follows customs and transforms. Now, there are good and evil, right and wrong and therefrom the clarity of virtue decreases.
The sage instructed people to cultivate both the inside and outside, become clear and yet more clear in order to rid themselves of inclination to attachment. They needed to sort away the malady of desires to things and instead become themselves completely empty and illuminating and that’s it!
‘Heaven principle is everywhere and people have true nature which is like my own’, If one does not guard the heart in practice and instead becomes intellectually proficient with various theoretical principles and speaks loftily of true nature and life then the condition of the people does not improve, then it becomes clear that goodness cannot be fulfilled and that his learning leans toward a wrong path.
The Dao of the Great Learning takes place when the virtue of the self illuminates and is being propagated toward others. One is then close and deeply connected to others until gradually the many facets of feelings are being fulfilled and a unifying underlying principle is grasped. Within a short time, by means of cultivating the self in order to help others, everybody assists in what is appropriate.
The scope of illuminating virtue is all encompassing, but it does materialize through getting close to people, then the gamut of human emotions -outward display and inner thoughts- become thoroughly clear. “
